Last night after I wrote my blog post a bunch of us went bowling at Larcomar (a shopping mall along the beach)! My bowling wasn't too good, but it was still a lot of fun. After bowling we went out to Chili's which was the only thing open and ordered drinks and appetizers at about midnight. I was exhausted by the time I got home.
This morning we left at 8 am and went to La Plaza Mayor in Lima which is where the Palace and Cathedral are located. We first went on a tour of the Palace which has so many beautiful rooms with Italian marble floors and intricate stain glass ceilings. We saw many things commemorating Túpac Amaru who was the last indigenous monarch of the Neo-Inca state.
After the Palace we went on a tour of the Cathedral. The Cathedral had tombs in the bottoms where the remains of Fransisco Pizarro, a famous conqueror of Peru are located. The Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral that was first built in 1535 and contains many replicas of scenes from the New Testament.
After the tour of the Cathedral we had some free time before we were to see the changing of the guards and we shopped around at some of the small boutiques near by Plaza Mayor.
The changing of the guards in front of the palace was cool. It took about 20 minutes and there was a band playing music and everything. The same guards that were inside the Place were outside and where the ones who changed positions. It's interesting to me how these guards just stand there for hours upon hours guarding the building. I wonder how they pass the time?
After the changing of the guards, our activities for the day ended and we went back to Miraflores. A bunch of us went and got lunch at La Lucha, a sandwich shop at Parque Kennedy and then I went back to my house to work on the presentation I will be giving about Peruvian history to students at UNIFE on Monday.
