Our activities today began with Lima's Capitol called the Congreso de la República in Lima. We took a tour through the building and learned about the political process of Peru. Peru's congress members serve terms lasting for 5 years. We walked through halls showing busts of the past members of congress. The building also had beautiful stain glass ceilings in the meeting rooms and hallways.
The next tour we went on was within walking distance of the first one and it was at Museo Afroperuano. This museum was all about the history of the Africans who were brought to Peru by the Spaniards during the Spanish conquest. This museum taught us about the living conditions of the slaves and the different names for the slaves of different ethnicities. Slaves were assigned different jobs, and some female slaves even breastfed the infants of the wealthy. The museum also had a lot of modern art which I included in the photos below.
After that museum we traveled to go and see Iglesia San Francisco. The area outside of the monastery was filled with merchants who were selling keychains, prayer candles, churros, paintings and many other touristy things. This monastery was built in 1774 and has housed many monks over the years. There was a huge beautiful library on the first floor as well as many other rooms that were used for prayer and studies. The coolest part of the tour was the Catacombs in the basement, that were originally used as a cemetery. The Catacombs were filled with original skulls and bones from monks who died in monastery. Unfortunately, the monastery did not allow any photography so I don't have any photos from there but below are the other pictures from today!
